Book Summary:

Cat Benoit is starting to think she has escaped her past. Creating a new life, off the grid in Texas far away from the world she knew in New Orleans. More importantly far away from the man who still haunts her nightmares. She remains watchful, avoiding anything that might alert him to her location. He can’t find her this time. She can’t go back.

Her life consists of self-defense training and works at a small coffee shop. Cat does her best to go unnoticed at both. Somehow, she caught the attention of Ridley, the new instructor at the dojo where she trains, and he won’t be denied the opportunity of getting to know her better. Cat knows she can’t escape her past and refuses to endanger someone else. Cat struggles with placing Ridley in harm’s way from her secrets. Ridley has his own secrets, that only Cat may understand if the betrayal doesn’t tear her apart.

Book Rating   3/5

Warning – Cat’s Lair does contain some explicit sexual scenes. This is not mentioned to stop you from reading the book, just informing the presence of the content.

Feehan weaves an interesting paranormal tale about a woman on the run. Terrified of a man in her past, struggling to exist and create a new life for herself. This is far from a story of a battered woman running away from an abusive relationship. Other hidden secrets are buried within her past, creating a character that is finding the courage to leave her past behind and improve herself. Yet can she as effectively eradicate her inner fears as well?

I like the way that Feehan created a story that isn’t reliant on the paranormal shifter component. The main characters having leopard-shifting abilities add to the story but is more of a side feature wove into the main story. It is a factor that drives certain parts of the story, such as the reasoning behind the character, Rafe Cordeau being so interested and obsessed with Cat Benoit.

Another area of the story that the leopard shifting component drove the story was the progression of the relationship between Cat and Eli. This was the part I disliked about Cat’s Lair. I was disappointed in how Feehan handled how Cat dealt with being betrayed by someone she was developing feelings for as a naturally distrustful woman. Cat felt deeply betrayed by Eli, yet the nature or instincts of their leopards was used to bypass that betrayal and hurt, furthering their relationship into more intimate terms without working through the trust issues of the betrayal, beyond an eventual “I forgive you” moment.

Overall, Cat’s Lair is a passionate tale of love that is marred by the past. The story contains action and drama as the past catches up with Cat.
