Book Summary:

Since the age of fifteen Genny Valente understood her father only cared for two things, money and power. At fifteen, both were stripped from her father, and her life changed as he directed her every action to regain both for him. Her father chose her schools, classes, career, and even her employer. She hoped for a sliver of recognition or love on graduation. Instead, her father gave her a present, one glorious summer of freedom as a wildlife observer in the mountains – for a price.

To experience her only chance at freedom from her father’s ambitions, Genny has to track down a powerful man named John Powell. As one of the Chosen Ones, he is gifted, but the man is also tormented by his past, making him a dangerous man more fearsome than the beasts in the mountain. Years ago, John fled the world and the Chosen Ones to the sanctuary of the mountains. Now Genny must find her courage to find the man, then betray him. Yet when the two meet, it seems Genny may be the only one that can save him.

Book Rating   3/5

Chains of Ice is the third book in the Chosen Ones series by Christina Dodd. The series contains six books featuring the battle between those known as the Chosen Ones and the Abandoned Ones. Christina Dodd does a marvelous job of making each book stand on its’ own, as well as enriched by reading the other books in the series. Each book features a different member of the Chosen Ones and their story.

Warning – Chains of Ice does contain some explicit sexual scenes. This is not mentioned to stop you from reading the book, just informing the presence of the content.

I like the fantasy supernatural legend basis of the Chosen One series. Individuals have gifts, but many of the gifts are very subtle powers. While John Powell’s gifts are considered one of the most powerful, Genny encourages him to search and discover the subtle side to his gift as well.

One of my favorite things about Dodd’s books is the way that a book may be about a specific couple you start to feel like you are meeting and learning small details about other characters from other books in a series.

As for dislikes, they are more personal preference and in no way deter me from reading other works by Dodd. First is the general explicit sexual scenes. Dodd is very tame in comparison with many other romance novel authors. I personally like to use my imagination more, so I just quickly skim through some scenes.  The second dislike pertains to Chains of Ice, there were a couple areas where Dodd jumps the story timeline that I felt were a bit abrupt, and in one jump the focus was entirely on John. While I realize the book is focused more on John, I would of like to see more of Genny’s viewpoint and experiences during these jumps, as the majority of the book is told from her side.

For those interested in the complete series, the books are in the following order:

Storm of Visions

Storm of Shadows

Chains of Ice

Chains of Fire

Stone Angel

Wilder
